The Wicked Widow

Pam thought she and Jake were a happy couple. Then, Pam’s next-door neighbor got her wicked claws into Jake, and Pam’s world turned upside down…

Description

If I could turn back time, would I do things differently? I’m not sure.

A year ago, I knew Jake was restless. His 45th birthday was coming up. I saw him looking in the mirror, searching for new gray hairs. I pretended not to notice, but — later in the day — I’d make a point of telling him how much I loved him. To me, he was still the guy who’d swept me off my feet in high school. The charming guy whose smile made my knees weak, even after 25 years of marriage.

Jake. My man. My hero. The father of our two kids, and the man I expected to grow old with.

Even now, my pulse races a little when I think of him, despite everything that’s happened.

But, I’m getting ahead of myself.

A year ago, when I saw him checking for gray hairs, there were other signs.

His new underwear was one of them. In fact, it was a major one. Who was he trying to impress? Who — except me — saw him in his shorts?

Instead of his usual plain cotton boxers, he started wearing snug, form-fitting little shorts. How little..? Well, they were styled like European men’s bikinis. Tiny. Very revealing, and most were striped or they looked like an animal print.

I liked the leopard ones, and said so. At the time, Jake beamed and strutted a little, and we both laughed.

I teased him about "midlife crisis" and joked that he might have to buy a little red sports car, maybe even a convertible. He didn’t laugh so much at that, so I realized I’d hit a nerve. I tried not to mention it again.

Then there was the time I woke up around 3 AM and he wasn’t next to me in our bed. When I got up to see where he was, I found him at the computer. His face was kind of flushed, and he closed his browser window in a hurry. He said he was checking on a problem at work. I thought I saw a flicker of guilt, but figured I was just tired. Besides, when he came back to bed, we made love. It was like the old days, when Jake had more energy and… well, enthusiasm in the bedroom.

But then, the following morning, I tried to give him a kiss and he avoided me. I probably looked hurt, and he said, "Sorry, hon. My mind is on paperwork for the new store. In fact, I may have to work late. Don’t wait up for me, okay?" Then he gave me a peck on the cheek and rushed out the door.

So yeah… the warning signs were there. I just didn’t take them seriously. I thought he was worried about the new store, like he said.

That’s how Pam’s story begins. It’s based on a true story of cheating, heartbreak, and one woman’s struggle to build a career and keep her marriage alive… while the heartless widow next door tried to tear it up.

Note: This is a 16,000-word novella. The full story is in this one book. This is not a serial.
